But it is usally better to work with the latest stable version. Audacity does not have midi compatibility so you cannot import midi or record midi only audio MP3 or WAV. In other words, I got this Instructable to work using these versions. (In Mac, Export to Midi option is available at File Export. It will open ‘ Edit Metadata ‘ dialog, click on ‘ OK ‘ to move to next screen. Once the MP3 file is open, click on File and then Export. Launch Audacity, click on open and select MP3 file.

If you know how to do this please post an Instructable. One thing I don't get into is how rip one instrument/voice from an MP3 with more than one. There are some optional applications for printing the MIDI file as sheet music or for editing the MIDI file. It may be possible to do this Instructable on another O/S. This is a Windows-centric project (sorry to non-Win people).

However, all is not lost because I discovered what looks to be a very useful audio editor.This is a demo for converting an MP3 to MIDI. I would expect a few errors, but not hundreds. So now I’m back to square one in looking for a way to generate a MIDI file from an audio file on Mac Sierra or iOS.The one I have sort of works but is completely terrible in the number of errors produced. I followed the instructions and everything went exactly as shown except at the end I got a message saying “cannot export audio in this format” or something like that. From that I hoped to use another program to print the score from the MIDI file. I saw instructions online describing how Audacity can export MIDI from an audio file. Looks like I’m another person coming here for the same reason. Somebody posts a mistake and everybody picks it up and repeats it. Instructions like this never tell you which Audacity version they’re using-or at least I didn’t see it. Is this export menu item a mistake? Is this an FFMpeg mismatch? I followed the instructions and I couldn’t do it, either. A short one note at a time guitar solo played slowly. I followed the instructions implicitly and received the message: Cannot export audio in this format. That explains why people show up on the forum wanting to convert music to MIDI. I have a simple guitar solo mp3 I want to convert to MIDI.
